Salary negotiation is the most valuable 15-minute conversation you'll ever have. Yet most professionals avoid it entirely.
Here's the truth: **employers expect negotiation.** When you don't negotiate, you leave money on the table and potentially signal a lack of confidence.
**My 5-step negotiation framework:**
**Step 1: Know your number**
Research salary ranges using LinkedIn Salary, Glassdoor, and industry reports. Target the 75th percentile for your experience level.
**Step 2: Anchor high**
When asked about expectations, give a specific number 15–20% above your target. This creates negotiation room.
**Step 3: Use silence as a tool**
After stating your number, stop talking. Silence is powerful — let them respond.
**Step 4: Respond to counteroffers strategically**
"I'm really excited about this role. Is there flexibility to get closer to [your number]?"
**Step 5: Negotiate the total package**
If they can't move on base salary, negotiate signing bonus, equity, remote work, extra PTO, or professional development budget.
My clients who follow this framework earn an average of $15,000 more annually.
